Samsung hits milestone with Galaxy Note; one million shipped globally

Samsung Galaxy Note

Samsung announced today that it has reached a respectable milestone with its Galaxy Note tablet/smartphone hybrid, citing one million units shipped globally to date. What makes the figure even more impressive is that the Note isn't officially available yet in one of Samsung's largest markets-- the United States. The Galaxy Note is currently gaining in popularity in France, Germany, Hong Kong and Taiwan, Samsung says, and will hit American shores "next year." Guinea-Bissau coup attempt fails while president is abroad

Friction between the army chief and the head of the navy reportedly behind attempt

A coup attempt in the West African nation of Guinea-Bissau has been thwarted, an army official claims. The attempt came while the ill president was seeking medical treatment abroad.

President Malam Bacai Sanha has been undergoing medical treatment in a Paris hospital since November.

LOS ANGELES, CA (Catholic Online) - President Malam Bacai Sanha has been undergoing medical treatment in a Paris hospital since November. France's foreign ministry declined to say whether he was still in France.

Violence broke out between two factions of Guinea Bissau's armed forces earlier this week, forcing the prime minister to seek refuge at a foreign embassy. Automatic weapons and rocket fire could be heard at the Santa Luzia army base in the capital Bissau. No casualties have been reported.

"Apparently, it is friction between the army chief and the head of the navy," a Bissau-based diplomat said. "The prime minister has sought refuge in a foreign embassy."

The army and the government of Prime Minister Carlos Gomes Junior are currently in control of the situation, the army chief of staff said at a news conference.

The army chief of staff was arrested on the orders of the head of the navy, but was later freed by his troops.

Army chief Antonio Indjai said authorities had arrested Natchuto Bubo, the navy chief, in connection with the incident. Tchuto said he denied any knowledge of an order to arrest the chief of staff.

"For a week now, I have been spending nights at my home, not at the barracks. I was informed of the situation, I had no idea what is going on," Tchuto told reporters.

It was just the latest in a series of upheavals for the West African nation. Since independence from Portugal in 1974, Guinea-Bissau has been beset by a series of coups, military revolts and political assassinations.

The country's former president, Joao Bernardo "Nino" Vieira, was assassinated on March of 2009, hours after the head of the army was killed in a bomb explosion.

Less than a year later, mutinous soldiers seized the head of the armed forces and placed the prime minister under house arrest in an apparent coup attempt.

Drug trafficking networks have reaped the benefits of the weak government and corruption to turn Guinea-Bissau, whose main legal export is cashew nuts, into one of West Africa's transit points for Latin American cocaine headed to Europe.

The nation sits at the bottom of most economic and health indices, as most of the people there subsist without electricity or clean running water. There are few job opportunities for young people and the average life expectancy is just 46 years.

Jones-Drew: Suits fuel NFL's concussion crackdown

? Jacksonville Jaguars running back Maurice Jones-Drew says lawsuits have fueled the NFL's crackdown on concussions.

The league's leading rusher spoke out about the issue again Wednesday, nearly a week after telling The Associated Press he would hide a concussion to stay in a game.

Jones-Drew has been questioned several times about his concussion views since. His latest comments are his strongest.

He says until recent years there "wasn't this big deal about concussions," and adds "the only reason they're making a big deal about concussions right now is because the league is getting sued over it."

He reiterates that he knows the risk of playing such a physical game, calling injuries an "occupational hazard." He adds that "you have to be willing to accept it, and I am."

GOP chairman: Ring not too small for many hats

WASHINGTON (AP) -- The head of the Republican Party says no negative vibes should be inferred from the GOP's inability, so far, to coalesce around a candidate to challenge President Barack Obama.

Reince Priebus (ryns PREE'-bus) tells ABC's "Good Morning America" it's very early, calling it "a horse race."

He adds, "We'll get there and we'll have a nominee pretty quickly." Asked if the muddled contest might be problematical, Priebus replies, "I don't know if I would get too uptight over that."

Priebus says he isn't worried about a third-party candidate, saying that would likely pose a greater threat to Obama than the GOP.

The party chairman says, "I just think America is ready to put a person in the White House who can make a promise and keep a promise.:"

Avastin May Help Some With Ovarian Cancer: Studies (HealthDay)

WEDNESDAY, Dec. 28 (HealthDay News) -- Two new studies suggest that the drug Avastin may lengthen progression-free survival by about four months for women with ovarian cancer.

What isn't clear yet is whether adding Avastin (bevacizumab) will make a difference in overall survival. One study suggested it would, while the other study didn't find a difference in overall survival between two treatment groups.

"The bottom-line results are a 28 percent reduction in disease progression with patients on continued bevacizumab compared to the standard treatment group. There was a 3.8 month median difference in progression-free survival," said Dr. Robert Burger, author of one of the studies and director of the Women's Cancer Center at Fox Chase Cancer Center in Philadelphia.

"We still have to fine-tune or optimize this sort of new paradigm of treatment. This regimen [chemotherapy plus continued Avastin] could be considered a frontline option for patients with advanced ovarian cancer. However, there are some risks to the treatment, and we haven't shown an impact on overall survival. But, in the European trial, they saw an overall survival benefit," Burger added.

"I think the difficult reality is that these studies are not clear-cut," said Dr. Len Lichtenfeld, deputy chief medical officer for the American Cancer Society. "The improvements in progression are modest and appear to be greater for women who have worse disease. What this ultimately means is that it's absolutely important for doctors treating women with advanced ovarian cancer to read these studies very carefully so they know who may benefit and the risks of treatment, and to counsel their patients very carefully before moving forward with Avastin treatment," Lichtenfeld explained.

"This is not a case where treatment can be initiated in every woman. The benefits for many women are modest at best," he added.

Results of both studies are published in the Dec. 29 issue of the New England Journal of Medicine. The studies were funded by Roche and Genentech (a Roche-owned company). Burger said Genentech played no role in the study design or analysis.

Burger's study included almost 1,900 women with newly diagnosed stage 3 or stage 4 epithelial ovarian cancer. All of the women had undergone surgery to remove as much cancer as possible. They were then randomly assigned to one of three treatment groups: standard treatment including paclitaxel and carboplatin chemotherapy; the Avastin-initiation group that included the standard chemotherapy and Avastin for the second through sixth treatment cycle; and the Avastin maintenance group that included chemotherapy plus Avastin for up to the 22nd treatment cycle.

The average progression-free survival was 10.3 months for the standard group, 11.2 months for the Avastin-initiation group and just over 14 months for the Avastin-maintenance group. There was no difference in overall survival for the three groups.

The European study included more than 1,500 women with varying types of ovarian cancer. Most had epithelial ovarian cancer, but the severity ranged from early-stage disease to stage 4. Seventy percent of the women enrolled in this study had stage 3 or stage 4 cancer.

The women were randomly assigned to receive either standard chemotherapy treatment or chemotherapy plus Avastin for up to 12 cycles of chemotherapy. The dose of Avastin used in this trial was half of what was used in Burger's trial.

Progression-free survival was 20.3 months for the standard group and 21.8 months for the standard therapy plus Avastin. In women who were considered at high risk for progression, the progression-free survival was 14.5 months on standard therapy and 18.1 months with the addition of Avastin. Overall survival in high-risk women was 28.8 months for women on standard chemotherapy and 36.6 months for standard therapy plus Avastin.

High blood pressure is a common side effect of Avastin, but Burger said that in most cases, it can be controlled with blood pressure medication. Another serious side effect associated with Avastin is bowel perforation, which means a hole opens in the bowel wall. This side effect occurred in fewer than 3 percent of women treated, but occurred twice as much in women taking Avastin.

Published reports peg the cost of the drug at somewhere between $4,000 and $9,000 a month, depending on co-pay assistance that's available from Genentech, Avastin's manufacturer. In a previous study, another research group looked at the cost effectiveness of treatment with Avastin in Burger's trial and found the standard treatment arm of the trial cost $2.5 million. Treating the Avastin-initiation group cost $21.4 million and the Avastin-maintenance group cost $78.3 million, according to the study, which was published in the March 7 issue of the Journal of Clinical Oncology. And, most of those costs came directly from the cost of the medication. Those researchers concluded that Avastin was not a cost-effective medication.

"We don't want cost to be a deciding factor, but for many women with ovarian cancer, cost may be a significant factor, and it needs to be weighed in the equation," Lichtenfeld said.

Avastin isn't approved in the United States for the treatment of ovarian cancer, so some insurance companies may balk at paying for it. Plus, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration pulled Avastin's approval for the treatment of metastatic breast cancer in November because the FDA found the risks of the drug outweighed its modest benefits. Avastin is still approved for the treatment of some types of colon, lung, kidney and brain cancer in the United States.

However, the drug was just approved by the European Union for use in ovarian cancer in combination with chemotherapy.

Untethered jailbreak now available for pre-A5 iPhones, iPads and Touches

It's just a few weeks since pod2g revealed his untethered jailbreak for iOS 5 and -- boom -- all of a sudden it's up for the DL. The exploit has been incorporated into redsn0w 0.9.10, the Pwnage Tool and Chronic Devteam's Cydia package, and it works on the iPhone 3GS, iPhone 4 (including the CDMA version), iPad 1, iPod Touch 3G and iPod Touch 4G, so long as they've been updated to iOS 5.0.1. Meanwhile, pod2g is reportedly now looking for a way to snap the shackles on A5-based devices too, but hopefully only after he's taken some rest -- a burned-out jailbreaker is no good to anybody. Full instructions are at the source link.

Notre Dame Football: How the Irish Can Pave a Path to a BCS Bowl in 2012

No matter what the situation at Notre Dame, expectations for the Fighting Irish are always ?BCS or Bust.? Even with the team losing some key pieces, 2012 sets up well for Notre Dame to make a run to the BCS.

Plenty Returning

The Irish will undoubtedly miss Michael Floyd, Jonas Gray and the rest of the departing seniors, but there are players at each position that have the potential to grow into those newly vacated roles.

T.J. Jones, Robby Toma, Ben Koyack and a crew of untested players including Davaris Daniels and Daniel Smith have enough skill between them to fill most of the void left by Floyd in the passing game. All-American tight end Tyler Eifert (assuming that he returns), can pick up the remainder of the slack and assume the role of go-to guy in the passing game.

On the ground, the combination of Theo Riddick and George Atkinson III will be able to spell Cierre Wood often enough. After taking a big step forward this season, Wood is poised to continue his growth as a senior.

On defense, Manti Te?o returns to fill the role that only he can occupy. He?ll continue to be the emotional leader of the Notre Dame defense and should come back even better (and healthier) in 2012.

Up front, Notre Dame will be improved. Injuries forced younger players like Aaron Lynch, Stephon Tuitt and Louis Nix to play big roles this season. With another year of experience under their belts, the defensive line will only get better in 2012.

Seniors Harrison Smith and Robert Blanton will be missed in the secondary. Notre Dame has plenty of depth at safety, but youngsters Lo Wood and Bennett Jackson will have to step into larger roles at corner next season.

All in all, the Irish look a bit thinner heading into 2012, but Notre Dame has enough talent (though it may be unproven) to fill out the roster very nicely.

?

An Infusion of Speed

On top of the returning players, an already strong 2012 recruiting class will bring a perennially necessary infusion of speed to South Bend. Players like Ronald Darby, Tee Shepard and Justin Ferguson give the Irish college-ready, dynamic athletes, capable of turning mundane plays into game-changers.

Notre Dame has already added a fair amount of speed to its roster in recent years, but still the Irish struggled to pop off the big play.

Notre Dame ranked 18th in the FBS this season with 207 plays from scrimmage that went for 10 yards or more. That kind of production is the hallmark of an offense that gets the ball to its playmakers in positions where they can succeed.

However, those players weren?t always capable of making the most out of those positions. The Irish finished the regular season 98th in the nation with only 16 plays for 30 yards or more.

Part of this probably comes from Tommy Rees? inability to stretch defenses with his arm, but part of it comes from a lack of game-breaking speed on the outside.

On defense, the same trend holds. Notre Dame was able to break up 38 passes this season, but converted only eight into interceptions.

A couple of extra steps on both offense and defense could make all the difference for the Irish, and a strong recruiting class can provide it.

?

Better at Quarterback

To me, Andrew Hendrix seems like the man for 2012, but at this point, nobody, not even Brian Kelly, knows who his quarterback will be next year.

Regardless, it?s reasonable to expect an upgrade in production. Even if Tommy Rees ends up back as the starter, he?ll have to win the job over two players (Hendrix and Everett Golson) with outstanding physical tools and more than one year of experience with Kelly?s offense.

Quarterback may not be a huge strength for Notre Dame in 2012, but it won?t be the weakness it was in big spots this season. The Irish threw 14 interceptions this season, 25th-worst in the country. Some of those picks were the result of bad decisions or poor throws, but a few (one against South Florida comes to mind) were just bad luck.

Add that to the fact that Notre Dame recovered less than half of the fumbles in its games and it paints a picture of a season in which the Irish were a bit unlucky.

Given those trends, Notre Dame?s turnover margin is likely to improve, regardless of who ends up as the starting quarterback next season.

With Andrew Hendrix or Everett Golson at the helm, the Irish can add a running element to the position. Hendrix showed against Stanford that he has the ability to both make and extend plays with his legs.

He?s capable of running some option and scampering for the occasional first down, but perhaps more importantly, Hendrix showed excellent awareness of the rush and did his best to keep himself in a position to get the ball downfield to his playmakers.

Even if neither Hendrix, nor Golson ends up as the starter, one of the two will almost certainly be in a position to play a role in the offense in every game.

If Rees is the starter, I expect the offense to run much like it did in Kelly?s final year at Cincinnati, when Tony Pike and Zach Collaros shared time at quarterback. The Bearcats finished that year fourth in the nation in scoring, and secured a Big East Championship and a BCS bowl berth.

?

Favorable Schedule

In this case, ?favorable? does not equate to easy. Rather, it means that Notre Dame?s 2012 schedule sets up well for Notre Dame to reach a BCS bowl.

Generally, the schedules and results for BCS at-large qualifiers fall into two categories. Teams either put up a gaudy record against a relatively easy slate (think 2006 Boise State), or finish with two or three losses against a tough schedule (think 2010 Arkansas).

Lesser known teams can only succeed by running the table, but traditional powers like Notre Dame have the advantage of being able to sneak in the back door with two or even three losses.

Going into 2012, Notre Dame?s slate is well-balanced between games the Irish have no business losing (Navy, Purdue, Pittsburgh, Boston College and Wake Forest), games they are fully capable of winning (Michigan State, Michigan, Miami, Stanford, BYU), and games that can be resume builders, regardless of the outcome (Oklahoma and USC).

Even if the Irish end up at 10-2 or 9-3, the schedule ensures that their resume will feature enough quality wins to warrant BCS consideration.

A trip to Norman, Okla. will be a huge test for Notre Dame, but the USC game will be the season?s biggest turning point. If Notre Dame enters that game with just one loss, the Irish have a good chance at the BCS, regardless of what happens at the?Coliseum.

However, if Notre Dame comes in twice, or even thrice beaten, a late-season win over a probable national title contender could propel the Irish into the BCS.

Heading into 2012, the talent is there and the schedule presents an opportunity for Notre Dame to reach its BCS goal.

Women's lung cancer risk not tied to childbirths

Women's lung cancer risk not tied to childbirths?

Jump to full article: Reuters, 2011-12-26
Author: Frederik Joelving

Intro:

A woman's lung cancer risk doesn't appear to be linked to the number of children she has, although some scientists had thought hormonal changes during pregnancy might protect against the disease.

That's according to a new report that sums up 16 previous studies on the topic, which researchers have explored to get a better understanding of lung cancer and possible treatments.

If lung cancer in women were tied to hormones the same way some breast cancers are, for instance, similar drugs might be effective against both diseases, said Jessica K. Paulus, who worked on the analysis.

So far, however, studies haven't agreed on whether or not pregnancies -- and by extension hormones -- play a role in lung cancer. . . .

The disease is rare in younger adults, but becomes more common as people grow old. Overall, the risk of getting lung cancer is about one in 13 for men and one in 16 for women. But these overall numbers include smokers, whose risk is many times higher than that of non-smokers.

"Both active smoking and exposure to second-hand smoking are some of the strongest risk factors for lung cancer," said Paulus. "Quitting smoking and quitting soon is associated with reducing your risk of lung cancer."

Stressed Chinese fight back with pillows

SHANGHAI - A whirlwind of pillows bearing the names of bosses and teachers filled the air as hundreds of Chinese gathered to blow off stress in Shanghai, staging a massive pillow battle.

The annual event marked its fifth year with such a surge in interest from stressed young office workers and students that organizers held two nights of pillow fighting before Christmas Day and plan another for Dec 30.

"Nowadays there are many white collar workers and students that are facing huge pressures at work and at school, so we hope to give them an outlet to release their stress before the end of the year," said Eleven Wang, the founder and mastermind behind the epic pillow fights.

"Sometimes we have pressure on us by our bosses, teachers and exams, so today we can go crazy. Everyone will get to write onto the pillows the names of their bosses, teachers and exam subjects, and enjoy and vent to the maximum," he added.

"After releasing the stress, we can once again face our daily life with joy."

Pillows were handed out at the door as participants entered, then emotion stoked by a rock concert, with many on the floor of the huge event space rocking and waving their pillows in time to the music.

Then came the fighting.

Pillows filled the air, with many combatants opting for throwing rather than using them to whack opponents. A few hapless participants shielded their heads with as many pillows as they could hold, but most ventured eagerly in to the fray.

"I really enjoyed the fight, but my friend was useless. He joined in for two ticks and could not go on, he was afraid of getting beaten by other people," said 24-year-old Chen Yi.

"I thought it was pretty meaningful. I've just been working so much (at the office) and never get to break out in a sweat, so it felt really good."

Others gamely said they enjoyed the experience even though they ended up as attackees rather than attackers.

"I don't know who pushed me, but all of a sudden I was in the pile of pillows, where I became the target of many people, and was beaten by all sorts of people," said university student Zhu Shishan. "Very meaningful."

DES MOINES, Iowa -- Republicans in search of their party's presidential nomination are returning to campaign mode in Iowa after a brief Christmas respite.

Rick Santorum planned a Monday hunting trip with conservatives in Iowa and Mitt Romney is phoning supporters.

With just a week until Iowa holds its leadoff caucuses and many voters still undecided, the final push ahead of the Jan. 3 contests was heading into a critical time. Campaigns planned new television ads and phone calls to persuade holdout caucusgoers still weighing options.

Romney, Rep. Michele Bachmann, Texas Gov. Rick Perry and former House Speaker Newt Gingrich all scheduled bus tours to start this week. Rep. Ron Paul, who has built what may be the strongest political machine in the state, is also set to return later this week.

Alcohol test for NYC police officer questioned

The New York Police Department has launched a probe into why internal affairs investigators were initially kept in the dark about an off-duty police officer who was suspected of drunken driving in a car crash that seriously injured a passenger, a spokesman said Sunday.

More than eight hours passed before Officer Rafael Casiano was given a blood-alcohol test. Court records show that by then, he only had trace amounts of alcohol in his system.

The NYPD's Internal Affairs Bureau "is investigating why there was an inordinate delay in it being notified after an off-duty member of the service was involved in a one-car accident," spokesman Paul Browne said.

Casiano, 44, was driving on a Bronx expressway at about 4:30 a.m. Friday when his car smashed into a center divider. The passenger was another off-duty officer, Keith Paul, who suffered a head wound and had to be hospitalized.

Police who responded to the scene smelled alcohol on Casiano and said he admitted he had been drinking, according to the court documents cited by the Daily News.

But the officer wasn't given a breath test until 1 p.m., the documents say. It showed his blood-alcohol level was between .032 and .029 ? well below the .08 limit.

Despite the delay, internal affairs investigators, "after interviewing EMT and medical staff and obtaining a warrant for the subject's blood, made the determination that he was unfit for duty, arrested him for DWI and suspended him," Browne said.

Casiano was arraigned Friday night on charges of DWI and vehicular assault and freed on $5,000 bail. The name of his lawyer was not immediately available.

The mother of the hospitalized officer told the Daily News that he and Casiano are close friends who had been at a Christmas party for their Manhattan precinct before the accident. She said her son doesn't remember what happened.

"This is my Christmas miracle," she said. "I'm so glad he is going to be OK."

North Korea to be at center of Japan-China talks (AP)

BEIJING ? Japanese Prime Minister Yoshihiko Noda arrives in Beijing on Sunday for talks focused on North Korea and promoting stability in the closed country after the death of Kim Jong Il.

Noda's first official visit to Beijing would normally have focused on bilateral issues, such as squabbles over islands claimed by both countries, but the death of Kim a little more than a week ago and the announcement of his son Kim Jong Un as the country's "supreme leader" has shifted the focus away from bilateral issues.

Noda is the first foreign leader to meet China's leaders since Kim's death and he will emphasize the need to get stalled six-party talks on North Korea's nuclear program back on track.

"I would like exchange views and information in detail so as to avert a harmful effect on peace and stability on the Korean peninsula," Noda told reporters in Tokyo before he left for his trip.

Noda meets his counterpart Wen Jiabao on Sunday, and then President Hu Jintao on Monday before returning home. His visit to China was planned before Kim's death was announced Dec. 19.

He will tell Wen that China's role as chair of the six-party talks is "very important," Chief Cabinet Secretary Osamu Fujimura said Saturday.

The six-party talks, which include the two Koreas, the United States and Russia, are aimed at disarming North Korea of its nuclear capability. Pyongyang walked out on the talks in 2009 ? and exploded a second nuclear-test device ? but now wants to re-engage.

Last year, Pyongyang also was blamed for two military attacks on South Korea that heightened tensions on the peninsula.

Noda, who came to power in September, met Hu in November on the sidelines of an APEC meeting in Hawaii.

Japan does not have diplomatic relations with North Korea, while China is the impoverished country's most important supporter and supplies it with food aid and much of its energy resources.

Noda also is expected to discuss the possibility of renting pandas for a zoo in Sendai to cheer up the northern Japanese region as it recovers from the tsunami disaster in March.

Japan and China have a list of sensitive topics they are trying to make progress on, including fights over islands and energy disputes in the East China Sea, and recently the arrests of Chinese fishermen Japan says have been illegally fishing in its waters.

The countries also want to make sure relations are on an even keel in the run-up to the 40th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic ties in September.

Shell oil spill off Nigeria likely worst in decade (AP)

LAGOS, Nigeria ? The head of Nigeria's oil spill management agency says an offshore oil spill from a Royal Dutch Shell PLC field is likely the worst in a decade.

Peter Idabor of the National Oil Spill Detection and Response Agency told The Associated Press on Thursday that oil from the spill in Shell's Bonga field has spread to roughly 100 nautical miles. Idabor said he expects oil to begin washing ashore on Nigeria's southern coast later Thursday.

Shell announced Wednesday it had closed its Bonga field after a leak of less than 40,000 barrels of oil. That's about the amount of a 1998 Mobil spill that saw oil slicks extend down Nigeria's coast to Lagos.

Colbert offering $500K to pay for SC GOP primary (AP)

COLUMBIA, S.C. ? Comedian Stephen Colbert is offering to pay half a million dollars to help subsidize South Carolina's first-in-the-South GOP presidential primary, as state officials struggle to pay for it, but there's doubt whether it would even be legal.

The Charleston native wrote in an op-ed Thursday in The State newspaper in Columbia that Colbert Super PAC ? a type of political action committee that allows him to raise unlimited amounts of money from corporations, unions and individuals ? will bridge the gap after state Republicans refused to contribute anything above $180,000 collected in candidates' filing fees.

The state Election Commission, which administers South Carolina's voting, has said it has $1 million on hand for the primary but is short of the total $1.5 million price tag. Spokesman Chris Whitmire says the Commission has notified budget officials the state may need to seek permission to run a deficit to fund the primary.

Colbert wrote that he offered make up that $500,000 funding gap after state Republicans ultimately turned down his proposal to pay them $400,000 if they'd name the contest after him. Party officials have confirmed meeting with Colbert earlier this year to discuss a deal that would have renamed the balloting "The Colbert Super PAC South Carolina Republican Primary" in exchange for a check from the comedian.

Colbert, who plays a mock conservative pundit on his TV show "The Colbert Report," says he also wanted to put a question about "corporate personhood" on the January ballot. He seized on the issue after a U.S. Supreme Court ruling eased restrictions on campaign spending by corporations.

Ultimately rebuffed by the GOP, Colbert says he started working with Democrats to get the issue on the ballot, but state Democratic Party Chairman Dick Harpootlian said Thursday that effort also fell through.

State GOP executive director Matt Moore said party officials were skeptical of Colbert from the beginning but entertained his early communications before turning him down.

"Despite our repeatedly saying `no,' Stephen Colbert, the comedian, seems intent on being involved," Moore said. "It's exactly why we were wary in the first place."

Regardless of the party's position, it would be up to the state whether to accept or reject any offer.

Whitmire said the question of whether a PAC can fund a South Carolina primary is a new one. If the Election Commission were presented with the money and decided to accept it, he said, they would have to ask state Attorney General Alan Wilson to decide if state law permits a political action committee to fund a primary.

Colbert, who did not immediately respond to a message seeking comment, wrote that he will be spending the holidays in his native state and is open to discussions.

"The counties need the money, and Colbert Super PAC wants to give it to you; call it a Christmas Miracle," he wrote. "I'm going to be home in South Carolina over the holidays, so just give me a call. Both state parties have my contact info."

Insight: How renewable energy may be Edison's revenge

LONDON | Wed Dec 21, 2011 11:40am EST

LONDON (Reuters) - At the start of the 20th century, inventors Thomas Alva Edison and Nikola Tesla clashed in the "war of the currents." To highlight the dangers of his rival's system, Edison even electrocuted an elephant. The animal died in vain; it was Tesla's system and not Edison's that took off. But today, helped by technological advances and the need to conserve energy, Edison may finally get his revenge.

The American inventor, who made the incandescent light bulb viable for the mass market, also built the world's first electrical distribution system, in New York, using "direct current" electricity. DC's disadvantage was that it couldn't carry power beyond a few blocks. His Serbian-born rival Tesla, who at one stage worked with Edison, figured out how to send "alternating current" through transformers to enable it to step up the voltage for transmission over longer distances.

Edison was a fiercely competitive businessman. Besides staging electrocutions of animals to discredit Tesla's competing system, he proposed AC be used to power the first execution by electric chair.

But his system was less scalable, and it was to prove one of the worst investments made by financier J. Pierpont Morgan. New York's dominant banker installed it in his Madison Avenue home in the late 19th century, only to find it hard to control. It singed his carpets and tapestries.

So from the late 1800s, AC became the accepted form to carry electricity in mains systems. For most of the last century, the power that has reached the sockets in our homes and businesses is alternating current.

Now DC is making a comeback, becoming a promising money-spinner in renewable or high-security energy projects. From data centers to long-distance power lines and backup power supplies, direct current is proving useful in thousands of projects worldwide.

"Everyone says it's going to take at least 50 years," says Peter Asmus, a senior analyst at Boulder, Colorado-based Pike Research, a market research and consulting firm in global clean technology. But "the role of DC will increase, and AC will decrease."

FROM CLOUD TO MICROGRID

The main factor driving demand is the need to conserve energy and produce more of it from renewable sources. Alternating current is generated by rotating engines, but renewable sources such as wind and solar produce DC power. To use it, because of the way our buildings are wired, we first convert it to AC.

Another thing that's happened since Edison's time is the advent of the semiconductor. Semiconductors need DC power, and are increasingly found in household appliances. These have to convert the AC supply back to DC, which is a waste of energy and generates heat. In the early years of industrialization this wasn't an issue, but today it's important, especially in the huge and fast-growing business of cloud computing.

The companies that handle our information traffic are racking their brains to boost efficiency and cut carbon emissions from their plants. Pike Research expects the green data center business to be worth $41 billion annually by 2015, up from $7.5 billion now. That will be just under a third of all spending on data centers.

Finnish information technology company Academica, for instance, has a data center in a granite cave beneath Helsinki's Uspenski cathedral. It uses Baltic sea water to cool the plant and feeds surplus heat to the city's homes. IBM has designed a solar array to power its Bangalore data center. Microsoft has filed a patent application for a wind-powered data center.

Direct current may be one way to increase efficiency and reduce emissions. Right now, outside a handful of universities, it's not the first thing people are thinking of because there are more basic things to do, says Eric Woods, Research Director for Smart Industry at Pike. But for companies on the leading edge, "it's sort of coming out of the research ghetto."

Pike has not put a figure on how big the DC component of the green data center market will be. Swiss-Swedish engineering firm ABB, a big DC advocate, says about 35 percent of demand for green data centers will come from the United States, 30 percent from Europe, and the rest spread globally.

Every day, says ABB, we all send more than 300 billion emails and 250 million tweets globally. The centers to handle all this data are growing by 10 percent each year and already consume 80 million megawatt-hours of energy annually -- almost 1.5 times the amount of electricity used by the whole of New York City. They're also responsible for about 2 percent of global carbon emissions.

DC power could help. At low voltages it has long been used in data centers but will be "game-changing" at higher voltages, ABB says.

Beyond its potential in data centers, DC power's ability to run on renewable energy sources makes it interesting for important plants that need to operate in "island mode" -- independent of the grid -- in case of a supply failure. Building systems with small, self-contained electricity distribution networks known as microgrids is of particular interest to governments and militaries who worry about terrorist attacks.

"In our view the market (for microgrids) is about to take off," said Pike Research's Asmus, who also sees demand for microgrids in countries that aren't densely covered by AC grids, such as Australia and India, and in developing countries looking to replace costly and wasteful diesel generators.

SMART GRIDS

And it's not just "island mode." Thanks to power electronics - semiconductor switching devices - DC can now be transmitted at high voltage over very long distances, longer than AC. It can be easily used in cables, over ground or under the sea.

High voltage direct current (HVDC) systems are the backbone of plans for smart grids, or supergrids, which aim to channel energy from places where power sources such as sunlight and hydropower are abundant to countries where it is scarce.

Siemens, which vies with ABB for market leadership in HVDC transmission, says demand is increasing fast. "By 2020, I'm expecting to see new HVDC transmission lines with a total capacity of 250 gigawatts. That is a dramatic increase," says Udo Niehage, CEO of the Power Transmission Division in Siemens' Energy Sector. "In the last 40 years, we've only installed 100 gigawatts worth of HVDC transmission lines."

Emerging markets have been the main drivers. ABB has installed a 2,000-km line in China that operates DC power; a 2,375-km HVDC project under construction in Brazil will be the world's longest transmission line when it comes online in 2013.

But Europe is also important. HVDC is now used in a power connection between Britain and the Netherlands. The island of Majorca, whose tourists push up power demand every summer, was hooked up to the Spanish mainland in September. The HVDC system can transmit 30 to 40 percent more energy than with conventional overhead lines carrying alternating current.

Jochen Kreusel, the head of ABB's Smart Grid program, says smart grid demand will put Europe at the forefront of HVDC growth over the next 10 years. "At the moment, based on the number of projects, I'm quite sure it's the strongest market," he said. Pike in November 2010 estimated HVDC investment would reach $12.1 billion by 2015.

The bulk of this DC know-how is currently with European companies, although Chinese firms are joining in. Besides ABB, Siemens and France's Alstom are the main players.

NOT THERE YET

There are plenty of obstacles to all these developments. People in some places worry about the environmental damage from laying new grids, others point to a lack of standards and say DC still has technological limitations that need to be fixed.

Public fears about the potential danger of high voltage cables could also be an issue, especially in the United States where standard voltages are already much lower than in Europe. There are practical limitations, such as a shortage of cable-making capacity.

If the economic climate does not improve, cash may also be a constraint. Countries such as Spain and the Netherlands have already cut subsidies to renewable energy projects. ABB's Kreusel says the economic crisis will have an impact on the market, but he still expects DC to become "an evolutionary add-on" to AC grids over the next 20 years.

How would Edison see all this? He might even have foreseen it. "I'd put my money on the sun and solar energy," he reportedly told his associates Henry Ford and Harvey Firestone in the 1930s. "What a source of power! I hope we don't have to wait until oil and coal run out before we tackle that."

Deportation could split up lesbian Vt. couple (AP)

MONTPELIER, Vt. ? Frances Herbert and her wife, Takako Ueda, were looking forward to the New Year's Eve family concert at the Baptist Church, the town fireworks on the pond and then a night at home to celebrate the arrival of 2012.

But federal immigration authorities have told Ueda she needs to leave the United States for her native Japan by Dec. 31, a move that would split up a couple who have been together more than a decade and were married under Vermont law in April.

Their relatively rare case illuminates the difficulties that binational gay couples face at a time when the Obama administration has pledged not to uphold federal marriage law in courts but the rest of the executive branch ? including immigration authorities ? still follows the letter of the law.

Federal immigration authorities demand extensive documentation showing that a binational couple claiming to be married really are: witness statements, property records, utility and other household bills showing both names and the like often are required. Herbert said she and Ueda submitted 600 pages of such evidence with their application.

"It's despicable," Herbert said. "We had 600 pages of proof, and 599 of them were completely ignored. One line on one page" ? the one that said they were both women ? "is what they paid attention to."

Herbert, a 51-year-old home care provider, and Ueda, a 56-year-old graphic designer, live in the southern Vermont town of Dummerston and got letters Dec. 1 from U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services, a division of the Department of Homeland Security, telling them that Ueda had to leave the country within 30 days. Ueda's student visa expired in July.

They had applied for "relative alien" status on the basis that she was the spouse of a U.S. citizen, but the federal agency denied that petition.

The letter to Herbert, who had applied to be Ueda's sponsor, said that under the federal Defense of Marriage Act, the 1996 law saying the government would not recognize same-sex marriages, they couldn't be considered spouses. DOMA defines marriage as "only a legal union between one man and one woman as husband and wife."

"Your spouse is not a person of the opposite sex," wrote Robert Cowan, a U.S. CIS official. "Therefore, under the DOMA, your petition must be denied."

Only a handful of states recognize same-sex marriages. Experts say there are not reliable numbers on how many couples find themselves in a similar situation to that of Herbert and Ueda, but it's believed the number is small. Many binational same-sex couples don't seek spousal status for fear of being rejected because of DOMA.

Steve Ralls, spokesman for Immigration Equality, a nonprofit legal aid group that works on immigration and sexual orientation issues, said one San Francisco couple remained together despite getting government notices that one of the men, an Australian, needed to leave the country, while a New Jersey man's partner had been deported to Peru.

President Barack Obama and Attorney General Eric Holder Jr. announced in February that the administration would no longer defend DOMA in court in the cases in which it is being challenged. But until the issue is resolved, executive branch agencies, including those within the Department of Homeland Security, it remains the law of the land.

But Leslie Holmans, second vice president of the American Immigration Lawyers' Association, said that even after getting the types of letters Herbert and Ueda got, some same-sex, binational couples benefit from "prosecutorial discretion" by immigration authorities.

She said many federal prosecutors believe "our systems are so overcrowded that what we really need to be doing is concentrating on people who are a risk to our country. What's happened is that we have seen some same-sex couples go before the immigration court and ask for prosecutorial discretion." Government lawyers often respond by "either dismissing cases or they're not enforcing the notice of deportation."

Holmans said the situation is far from ideal because affected immigrants are left in "legal limbo," still without recognized immigration status and unable to get a job or seek other government benefits.

Scott Titshaw, a professor at Mercer University Law School in Georgia who has practiced immigration law and written articles on DOMA, said Ueda and Herbert most likely shouldn't fear Ueda's imminent arrest but "still have plenty to worry about." He said if Ueda traveled abroad, then she might be barred from re-entering the U.S. With local authorities in some states cracking down on illegal immigrants, Ueda might also want avoid travel to places like Arizona and Alabama, which both have strict immigration laws.

Herbert and Ueda first met as students at Aquinas College in Michigan in 1980 and stayed in touch during the next couple of decades after Ueda returned to Japan and married a man. She said that when Herbert went to visit her in Japan in 1999, she made a big decision. "I had a good marriage, but there was something missing, and that something was Frances." Eight months later, she moved to the United States, and the two had a commitment ceremony in 2000, marrying in 2011.

Both vowed to fight any effort to break them up.

"I'm a really great law obeyer. I grew up in Japan. We follow laws," Ueda said with a laugh. "But I have a very strong feeling, too, that I won't go back to Japan. I don't have a place to live in Japan. My family, my existence, is not there anymore."
