Verbatim Easy Riser Bluetooth Notebook Laser Mouse

The Verbatim Easy Riser Bluetooth Notebook Laser Mouse ($26 street) is a competent mouse that gives you the ease of Bluetooth connectivity, but its key feature?built-in height adjustment?falls flat. It's similar in size to the Editors' Choice Logitech Couch Mouse M515 ($49.99 direct, 4 stars), and even with its foibles, it still offers a decent Bluetooth mouse for less.

Design
The height adjustment may be misleadingly described, as the adjustability isn't so much a matter of setting the height to your personal preference as it is of choosing between two height settings. The Easy Riser has two positions, raised and lowered. In the lowered position, the mouse has a profile not unlike the Logitech M600 Touch Mouse ($69.99 direct, 4 stars)?a comfortable 1.1 inches off the surface of the desk. In the raised position, the back end raises to 1.3 inches with the mouse buttons and scroll wheel shifting to a slightly steeper angle. The height change is almost entirely in the height of the mouse body, particularly the portion under the heel of the palm, closest to the wrist. For being such a key feature, the height adjustment seems like a non-starter that most will ignore.

The Easy Riser measures 1.1 by 2.2 by 3.7 inches (HWD), though it expands to be 1.3 inches thick when adjusted to its full height. It's also light, weighing a mere 3 ounces, with two AAA batteries contributing to the weight. It's lighter than the 4.6 ounce Couch Mouse M515, but has more corners, thanks to a rectangular design that allows use with either the right or left hand. The squared off shape of the Easy Riser isn't uncomfortable, but it isn't the most ergonomically friendly shape, either. Pair that with the raised wrist position that raising the Easy Riser forces your hand into, and there may be some ergonomic issues with this supposedly ergo-friendly mouse.

Features
The mouse is fairly simple to set up. Pop in the batteries, and power on the mouse using the power switch on the underside of the mouse. On your Bluetooth-equipped PC, go into Devices and Printers and click "Add a Device"?the mouse should appear, ready to pair with your laptop. If it doesn't, simply press the "connect" button on the underside of the mouse. Once you're all paired up, that's it. The beauty of Bluetooth is that there's no cord to bother with, no dongle to lose, and no goofy adapter and charger like the one used with the Razer Mamba (2012) ($129.99 direct, 4 stars). You shouldn't need to reconnect either, even when powering either the laptop or mouse on and off. Once the two are paired, you're all set, and you also get the greater range offered by Bluetooth; up to 30 feet. And, unlike the HP Wi-Fi Touch Mouse X7000 ($59.99 list, 3 stars), the mouse is the normal size and weight.

The Easy Riser is a laser mouse, using a laser optical sensor that tracks at 1600 dpi. While this isn't sensitive enough to satisfy engineers or twitch gamers who demand extreme accuracy in their mice, it's more than sufficient for day to day use in the home or office. The right and left mouse buttons click easily, though they are a bit noisy. The scroll wheel is a bit stiff, and won't provide any sort of inertia scrolling, but it's adequate. It's also clickable, serving as a programmable middle button.

The included software lets you adjust the settings, but it's rudimentary to say the least. The Mouse Settings utility lets you assign a specific action to the middle button, letting you click the scrollwheel to minimize windows, open a few predetermined menus, or you can assign the button with cut, copy, or paste functionality. You can also adjust the speed of vertical scrolling. Most users won't find the utility to be useful, but it's not needed to use the mouse either.

To conserve battery power, the Easy Riser has an automatic sleep mode that kicks in after a few minutes of disuse. Turning it back on is as simple as moving the mouse and waiting a moment for the mouse to respond. The mouse can also be turned off with a switch on the underside of the mouse, and you'll definitely want to turn it off when taking it somewhere in a laptop bag. Another handy feature?the mouse will also pop up a warning when the battery life dips too low, giving you enough notice to pick up new batteries within a few days of the two AAAs dying out.

All in all, the Verbatim Easy Riser Bluetooth Notebook Laser Mouse is a decently priced Bluetooth mouse, and for those who find it comfortable, the height adjustment shouldn't be a problem. It's more affordable than the Editors' Choice Logitech Couch Mouse M515, but it just isn't as comfortable. If comfort is a sticking point, you may want to shop around.

Santorum: US weak on Iran, Israel during Obama era

FAIRFIELD, Calif. (AP) ? Republican presidential candidate Rick Santorum strongly criticized President Barack Obama on foreign policy Thursday, saying that the United States has been slow to address Iran's threat to develop nuclear weapons, has ignored its ally Israel and rushes to engage America's enemies.

Santorum suggested that many of Obama's foreign policy decisions have been based on political considerations because the November presidential election is approaching. He pointed to an incident earlier this week in which Obama was caught on tape telling Russian President Dmitry Medvedev that he would have more room to negotiate on missile defense after the November election.

"Here's the president of the United States, the leader of the free world, saying, 'Give me a little space, buddy, a little space, a little flexibility, because I've got an election coming up and then I'll be, then I'll throw some of our other allies under the bus," Santorum said.

Santorum spoke to about 200 supporters at the Jelly Belly Candy Co. in Fairfield, Calif., touching on familiar criticisms of the president and repeatedly invoking President Ronald Reagan, who made the candy company famous by serving its jelly beans from his desk at the White House.

In a reference to Reagan's 1986 summit meeting with Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev, in which their nuclear treaty talks fell apart, Santorum said: "Ronald Reagan didn't whisper to Gorbachev, 'Give me some flexibility.' He walked out of Iceland."

The former Pennsylvania senator said Obama has taken his eye off the real threat facing America, the development of a nuclear weapon in Iran, to avoid a confrontation before the election.

"And what has he done on that front? What he's done on that front is the same thing he did off-camera with the president of Russia. 'Give me a little time,' and that's exactly what he's given to Iran, a little time," he said.

Obama has said he didn't have a hidden agenda with Russia and that his comments caught on tape only meant that election-year politics make any nuclear arms reduction or missile defense negotiations extremely difficult.

Santorum was fundraising in California. The state's primary does not come until June, and the state is not typically in play, but Santorum told supporters that this year their votes will matter. In the meantime, he urged them to give generously and to call their friends in Wisconsin.

Santorum also invoked Reagan's name to jab at front-runner Mitt Romney, saying Romney lacks Santorum's core convictions on the economy, social issues and on foreign policy. He held a mini Etch A Sketch, a reference to a comment by a Romney aide who said the former Massachusetts governor would be able to reset his campaign after the extended primary fight.

"No one doubted where Ronald Reagan was on the issue of communism. No one doubted where he was, there was no sense that there might be an Etch A Sketch policy when it came to our national security," he said.

Santorum said he has been consistent in stressing radical Islam as the primary foreign threat against America and pushing for sanctions against Syria and Iran.

The former senator also said Obama is threatening the future stability of Iraq and Afghanistan by signaling the U.S. exit strategy and that he wrongly abandoned missile programs in Poland and the Czech Republic.

Santorum said Obama has endangered the state of Israel because of his "lack of moral certitude, the lack of vision, of the greatness of our country."

At one point, as Santorum emphasized his socially conservative values, including opposition to abortion and gay marriage, a woman in the back of the room interrupted his speech and yelled, "California stands for marriage equality." Santorum eventually asked the crowd to drown out the woman with clapping and cheers, and security removed her from the room.

The Pros and Cons of Outsourced IT Services ? Simple Business ...

There are many reasons that a business or corporation might choose to outsource its information technology (IT) services. Usually, it?s to control costs as IT expertise and needs may be out of reach of the company?s budget or capabilities. Some companies retain in-house IT personnel for core services and outsource specific parts of their IT infrastructure while others outsource it all.

The decision to outsource depends on the needs of the business. What doesn?t change, no matter the reason for and amount of outsourcing, are the general pros and cons of outsourced IT services. Like any other decision, it has good and bad points and these should be weighed carefully before the choice is made.

=== The Pros

The advantages to outsourcing are many. Whether you choose a local provider or someone half a world away, you will see some benefits:

Economies of Scale ? in today?s sophisticated world of communications and IT infrastructure choices, companies and businesses often find themselves in competitive need for specific services that are very expensive to implement in-house. Many of today?s services, even by very large corporations that could afford to build their own, are outsourced through Cloud Computing, database storage systems, software as a service (SaaS), etc. By utilizing the resources of providers who have built the expensive infrastructure and employed the experts required to maintain it, the corporation can save itself the costs and requirements of building their own. Whether the need is great or small, economies of scale can often lower the price point considerably.

Personnel Specialization Costs ? many of the IT services businesses require today must have specially-trained or hard-to-find personnel to handle them. These experts can be expensive and if the justification for their annual salary is not there, management is likely to find itself having to outsource.

Flexibility and Expansion ? back to the economies of scale above, the ability to outsource to experts with the infrastructure and trained personnel to accomplish the IT service needed, the growth and expansion (or changes) of the company can be dealt with more easily with quality outsourcing.

=== The Cons

Of course, there are down sides to everything. Outsourcing IT is no different. Here are some problems that outsourcing can have:

Loss of Control ? losing direct control may be a security or liability issue for the business. For some businesses, offshore outsourcing may pose bigger problems than outsourcing locally. Many firms actually outsource to nearby providers (near-sourcing) so as to allow easy and frequent face-to-face or voice-to-voice communications without time zone barriers or cultural misunderstandings.

Security Issues ? mentioned above, these are nearly always the top reason companies will not outsource all or some part of their IT. Some firms are legally bound not to outsource because of government security requirements while others may only be able to outsource to specifically-licensed providers, making them cost-prohibitive. The security and legal ramifications of outsourcing can be a complex issue to deal with.

PR ? companies who choose to outsource may find themselves in a tangle of public relations problems when former employees or current workers threatened by the outsourcing alert the press or create PR problems. Even firms who never lay off a single employee when outsourcing, can find local unions or activists causing them problems because of the choice to outsource.

Whatever your situation, making the decision to outsource or not to do so is likely to have ramifications for your business for years to come. Weigh the choice carefully.

Your GOOD Isn't Good Enough ? Insurance Sales Training | Sales ...

progress

After 12 years it?s finally over. Together, Richard and I toiled over umbrella policies, term life, jewelry appraisals, auto and home insurance. And through it all, I was in good hands. He returned calls quickly, gave me the answers I needed and was always professional. So why after doing a good job for all those years did he lose my business? The answer is simple. While being adequate or even a good salesperson may prevent customers from actively pursuing other business, it does not defend against a another salesperson offering something more than ?good enough.?

So when rookie insurance agent Marcus gave me a call, asked to meet with me, delivered his presentation, showed how he would save me money, and then asked for my business?I jumped!

Because when products are equal and the relationship is purely transactional, the only thing that matters is price.

Let me explain. If I put five soda machines in front of you that dispensed almost the exact product, but one of them was 10% less expensive, which one would you put your money into? Correct! But what if one of them offered a soda that came in a frosty mug, crushed ice, whipped cream (optional for you health nuts), a cherry and a pink umbrella? Wouldn?t that experience be worth the 50 cents extra? Heck yes! And after that liquid ecstasy came out, wouldn?t you tell everybody you knew to run to that machine and buy one? That, my friend, is called referrals.

So this week, I want you to think of your top 10 customers and ask yourself, ?What have I done to create an experience or add value in a way that shows my customers I am irreplaceable?? If the question scares you?GOOD! Because sometime over the next 30 days your competition is coming for your business. NOW is the time to defend it. Because there are few words more painful to the ears of a salesperson than, ?You did a good job, we just decided to give somebody else a try.?

3D Sun (for iPad)

What with recent headlines about solar flares, coronal mass ejections, geomagnetic storms, and spectacular auroral displays, many people have been wondering what the heck is going on with the Sun. 3D Sun, a free app for iPhone and iPad, provides answers in semi-regular updates on the state of the Sun, replete with dazzling images and/or videos.

The app is the brainchild of Tony Phillips, Ph.D., an astrophysicist who writes the Spaceweather. website, a key resource on solar activity and its effects on Earth. Released in February 2010, 3D Sun has only increased in its importance as the sunspot cycle nears its peak; ?solar max? is expected in about a year.

I chose to review the iPad version (which I tested on an iPad 2) as it best shows off the app?s stunning visuals, but most of what I write here applies to the iPhone version as well. The one difference I noticed between the versions is in the organization of content. The iPad version has four tabs along the bottom: SDO Gallery; 3D Sun; News; and Help. The iPhone adds a fifth tab, Conditions, in which current solar-terrestrial conditions are shown; in the iPad, Current Conditions are displayed under the News tab.

Gorgeous Imagery?

True to its name, 3D Sun provides three-dimensional images of the Sun in each of 4 different wavelengths, courtesy of NASA?s twin STEREO (Solar Terrestrial Relations Observatory) spacecraft, currently on opposite sides of the Sun from each other. Multiple images are combined to form a rotating solar globe, with the bright active regions around sunspots marked. Representations of the two STEREO spacecraft in their current positions relative to the Sun are also shown.

The SDO Gallery tab contains 9 different images and videos taken by the Solar Dynamics Observatory (SDO), which was launched in early 2010. SDO takes ultra-high resolution images of the Sun in every second, so they can be combined to make videos. All of the images in the gallery, however, are from the spacecraft?s first couple of months of operation. Although all are spectacular, as far as I can tell, they don?t ever seem to be updated. The site does provide a link to the SDO web site, which has more extensive galleries and information, but one has to be online to access it.

All the Sun News that's Fit to Print

The News tab provides bulletins of noteworthy events related to the Sun: flares, auroras, coronal mass ejections (CMEs), geomagnetic storms, eclipses?even comets that stray too close to our star. They?re accompanied by images or video (usually spectacular), in some cases even audio files (for instance, of radio noise accompanying a solar flare). Each news item has buttons for Twitter, Facebook, and Email, so you can share the content from within the app. The news items try to put solar events into perspective; for example, one describing an ongoing S3-class solar radiation storm noted ??Such a storm is mainly a nuisance to satellites, causing occasional reboots of onboard computers and adding noise to imaging systems?.?

The Help tab provides a brief glossary of solar science terms, particularly ones relevant to the app: Auroras; Coronal Hole, Geomagnetic Storm; STEREO; Yellow/Blue/Green/Red Sun. (The last ones refer to the false-color images in different wavelengths depicted in the 3D Sun rotating globe.) Missing, though, are many basic terms: corona, solar wind, sunspot, sunspot cycle, prominence, filament, active region, let alone terms like the K Index mentioned in the Current Conditions reports.

No Sun Primer

This brings to light the main thing I felt was missing from this app: A primer on solar dynamics, giving a user new to the subject some background on solar magnetism, sunspots and the sunspot cycle, and the conditions under which solar flares and CMEs form, as well as how radiation and particles from these events interact with Earth?s atmosphere and magnetic field. The news items are well written and contain some of this information, especially as it relates to geomagnetic storms, but it would be nice to have it all in one place for a newcomer to refer to.

Nonetheless, this free app is informative and visually stunning, containing useful information and great graphics of our star and the flares, CMEs, auroras, and other phenomena that it spawns. The current solar cycle is slowly approaching its peak, so 3D Sun?s time has come. Though the app is best for amateur astronomers with some knowledge of solar phenomena, it contains much that should be of interest to anyone curious about our star?it?s worth putting on your iPad for the spectacular photos and videos alone.?

Ref gives out 5 red cards ? in lockerroom

Last week we showed you a soccer ref who red-carded a player as he lay unconscious on a gurney being loaded into an ambulance (that?ll teach him to get his neck broken). Today?s soccer officiating highlight comes from England?s League Two, where Bradford City and Crawley Town got into a rather heated brawl following Crawley?s 2-1 victory. Five players were sent off ? equaling the English record ? but it was the manner in which they were ejected that is of note here. Refs actually barged into the locker rooms following the match to red-card the offending players.

This may have been the first time in soccer history that a player was shown the red card while naked. Now that will mess with your self esteem.

A referee sent off five players in the dressing rooms after a post-match brawl at an English League Two (fourth tier) game between Bradford City and promotion-chasing Crawley Town.

?I can?t believe this has happened,? Bradford manager Phil Parkinson, who had three players shown red cards after the 2-1 home defeat on Tuesday night, told the BBC.

?I have never been in a situation before where a ref has come into the dressing room, pulled players on one side and sent them off. He wouldn?t allow me in there.?

Six Crawley players and one from Bradford were booked during the match with Bradford?s Andrew Davies, who was sent off, now set for a five-match ban after being shown red cards twice previously this season.

Just imagine if you will the U.S. football equivalent of this. Ref reviews video of suspected roughing-the-passer play in the fourth quarter, then trots into the Baltimore Ravens? locker room, finds Ray Lewis sitting in front of his locker, and throws a flag. ?Roughing the passer, No. 52, defense. Fifteen yards penalty, to be enforced next week.?

Spike Lee, latest celeb to practice reckless tweeting

Featured

12 hrs.

Many Egyptians are living without electricity or jobs, and soon, those who still do have access to power may also have to do without online ... Read more

13 hrs.

Spike Lee wasn't the first to retweet the erroneous address on Twitter blindly accepted by many as that of George Zimmerman, the man who fatally shot 17-year-old Trayvon Martin last month. But the filmmaker's message -- sent last week to his 240,000 Twitter followers -- was the most viral.

Elaine McClain, 70, the owner of the misidentified house in Sanford, Florida, and her husband David McClain, 72, tell news outlets they're now "living in fear." The address spread on Twitter, accompanied by threats of violence, and the couple are now staying at a hotel "to avoid the spotlight and possible danger," reports the Orlando Sentinel.

Oh, and Mrs. McClain? She reportedly has a heart condition. Awesome.

So how did this happen? As The Smoking Gun breaks it down, Marcus Davonne Higgins, the 33-year-old Los Angeles man behind the bad address, confused McClain's son, George W. Zimmerman, who once lived at the address, with George Michael Zimmerman, the man who killed Martin. Higgins then blasted the address to the Twitter accounts of Will Smith, 50 Cent, LeBron James, as well as to Lee. But Lee is the only one who retweeted it.

The great big "WRONG!" here isn't the bad address, or whether Lee should research the info before he retweets. And as regrettable as it is, Lee can't be held accountable for giving conservative pundit Michelle Malkin more fuel for Trayvon Martin race baiting on her Twitter "news" site Twitchy. It's this: Celebrities have no business using their position of power and popularity on Twitter to incite a mob.

We decry it when members of 4chan's /b/board broadcast the phone number, address and other identifying info about young girls suddenly popular on the Internet. Here in the West, we're horrified by stories of China's Internet mob, "mobilized to root out, expose and shame people they perceive to be exhibiting corrupt or immoral behavior," sometimes resulting in real-world violence. It's equally not OK for U.S. celebrities to do the same.?

We saw this to a lesser degree last week when Alec Baldwin mustered a Twitter army against someone he claimed was harassing his girlfriend on the Internet. When a celebrity directs his fanatic legion against a person outside a position of power, that's straight-up bullying.

Posting on Twitter, Baldwin gave out the handle of the alleged?harasser, @scarfacemadam, whom he said "has entered the twitter-verse ONLY to harass my girlfriend" in a way "that is borderline threatening." He asked users to "go to her address and read just a few of her posts, and give her your notice of her behavior."

While many of the Twitter attacks against?@scarfacemadam didn't?compare to the jillions of ugly death threats tweeted by Justin Bieber fans on any given day, they weren't pretty. As we noted then,?if the troll harassing his GF really is as bad as he claimed, then it's way to fuel a psycho stalker, Alec Baldwin! Conversely, if the troll was just your run-of-the-mill Internet jerk (with or without diagnosable mental issues), then Baldwin just sent thousands of people in that troll's direction.?

As it turned out, the kerfuffle faded fast soon after the @scarfacemadam account went dormant. It could've been worse. It wasn't.

In Lee's case however, helping chum Twitter could've resulted in violence -- against an innocent elderly couple or a man yet to face the justice system -? as well as a jail sentence for any Lee fans who took his retweet to heart. ?

Helen A.S. Popkin goes blah blah blah about the Internet. Tell her to get a real job?on?Twitter?and/or?Facebook. Also,?Google+.

Co-working and business networking in Westgate, Kent

MargateJelly is a fairly new event (Number 2 is on the 28th March at the Westgate Pavilion). The?idea is to get together with likeminded people for a change of scene, to chat, exchange help and?advice, work together and who knows, maybe come up with a new idea you can collaborate on.

It tends to work best for freelancers, home workers and people running small businesses, who may?feel they miss the corporate office environment and want a change of scenery.

We are running a free Marketing surgery at this event and there are more things planned. Running?from 10am to 2pm ? you should come and experience 4 hours of co-working, collaborating, learning?and above all fun.

People came away from the first event having used MargateJelly to hold meetings, find solutions to?problems and generally network with other business.

The event is ?3 to cover the cost of the venue and that is paid direct to them on the door. Why?not book on now ? visit http://www.margatejelly.co.uk or book direct via Eventbrite ? http://margatejelly.eventbrite.com

Food and drinks are available from the venue as is free WIFI

We look forward to seeing you!

Blocking 'oh-glick-nack' may improve long-term memory

ScienceDaily (Mar. 27, 2012) ? Just as the familiar sugar in food can be bad for the teeth and waistline, another sugar has been implicated as a health menace and blocking its action may have benefits that include improving long-term memory in older people and treating cancer.

Progress toward finding such a blocker for the sugar -- with the appropriately malicious-sounding name "oh-glick-nack" -- was the topic of a report presented at the 243rd National Meeting & Exposition of the American Chemical Society (ACS) in San Diego on March 27.

Linda Hsieh-Wilson, Ph.D., explained that the sugar is not table sugar (sucrose), but one of many other substances produced in the body's cells that qualify as sugars from a chemical standpoint. Named O-linked beta-N-acetylglucosamine -- or "O-GlcNAc" -- it helps in orchestrating health and disease at their origins, inside the billions of cells that make up the body. O-GlcNAc does so by attaching to proteins that allow substances to pass in and out of the nucleus of cells, for instance, and helping decide whether certain genes are turned on or off. In doing so, O-GlcNAc sends signals that may be at the basis of cancer, diabetes, Alzheimer's disease and other disorders. Research suggests, for instance, that proteins loaded up with too much O-GlcNAc can't function normally.

At the ACS meeting, Hsieh-Wilson described how research in her lab at the California Institute of Technology and Howard Hughes Medical Institute implicate O-GlcNAc in memory loss and cancer. The research emerged from Hsieh-Wilson's use of advanced lab tools for probing a body process that involves attachment of sugars like O-GlcNAc to proteins. Called protein glycosylation, it helps nerves and other cells communicate with each other in ways that keep the body coordinated and healthy. When O-GlcNAc is attached to a protein, that binding process is known as O-GlcNAc glycosylation.

Hsieh-Wilson's team screened the entire mammalian brain for all O-GlcNAc-glycosylated proteins, using a new process that her laboratory developed. They identified more than 200 proteins bearing O-GlcNAc attachments or tags, many for the first time. The research was done in mice, stand-ins for humans in research that cannot be done on people. Some of the proteins carrying O-GlcNAc were involved in regulating processes like drug addiction and securing long-term storage of memories.

O-GlcNAc's effects on one particular protein, CREB, got the scientists' attention. CREB is a key substance that turns on and regulates the activity of genes. Many of the genes in cells are inactive at any given moment. Substances like CREB, termed transcription factors, turn genes on. Hsieh-Wilson found that when O-GlcNAc attached to CREB, CREB's ability to turn on genes was impaired. When the researchers blocked O-GlcNAc from binding CREB, the mice developed long-term memories faster than normal mice.

Could blocking O-GlcNAc boost long-term memory in humans?

"We're far from understanding what happens in humans," Hsieh-Wilson emphasized. "Completely blocking O-GlcNAc might not be desirable. Do you really want to sustain all memories long-term, even of events that are best forgotten? How would blocking the sugar from binding to other proteins affect other body processes? There are a lot of unanswered questions. Nevertheless, this research could eventually lead to ways to improve memory."

In a related study, Hsieh-Wilson found that O-GlcNAc interacted with another protein in ways that encourage the growth of cancer cells, suggesting that blocking its attachment might protect against cancer or slow the growth of cancer. And indeed, in mouse experiments, blocking O-GlcNAc resulted in much smaller tumors.

Again, a treatment for humans based on this discovery is far in the future, but the study singles out O-GlcNAc as a potential new target for developing anti-cancer drugs.

(AP) ? U.S. investigators believe the U.S. soldier accused of killing 17 Afghan civilians split the slaughter into two episodes, returning to his base after the first attack and later slipping away to kill again, two American officials said Saturday.

This scenario seems to support the U.S. government's assertion ? contested by some Afghans ? that the killings were done by one person, since they would have been perpetrated over a longer period of time than assumed when Army Staff Sgt. Robert Bales was detained March 11 outside his base in southern Afghanistan.

But it also raises new questions about how Bales, who was formally charged Friday with 17 counts of premeditated murder and other crimes, could have carried out the nighttime attacks without drawing attention from any Americans on the Kandahar province base.

The two American officials who disclosed the investigators' finding spoke on condition of anonymity because the politically sensitive probe is ongoing.

Many details about the killings, including a possible motive, have not been made public. The documents released by the U.S. military Friday in connection with the murder charges do not include a timeline or a narrative of what is alleged to have happened.

Bales, 38, is accused of killing nine Afghan children and eight adults. The bodies were found in Balandi and Alkozai villages ? one north and one south of the base, in Kandahar's Panjwai district.

Bales also was charged with six counts of attempted murder and six counts of assault in the same case.

U.S. investigators now believe that Bales walked off his base that night and killed several people in one of the villages, then went back to the base. The American officials, who are privy to some details of the investigation, said they do not know why Bales returned, how long he stayed or what he did while there.

He then slipped off the base a second time and killed civilians in the second village before again heading back toward the base. It was while he was returning the second time that a U.S. military search party spotted him. He is reported to have surrendered without a struggle.

Bales is being held in a military prison at Fort Leavenworth, Kan.

There have been previous suggestions that Bales could have returned to base after the first set of shootings, but the American officials who spoke to The Associated Press on Saturday provided the first official disclosure that U.S. investigators have come to this conclusion.

Members of the Afghan delegation investigating the killings said one Afghan guard working from midnight to 2 a.m. on March 11 saw a U.S. soldier return to the base around 1:30 a.m. Another Afghan soldier who replaced the first and worked until 4 a.m. said he saw a U.S. soldier leave the base at 2:30 a.m. It's unknown whether the two Afghan guards saw the same U.S. soldier.

U.S. officials have said Bales left the base the first time armed with his 9mm pistol and M-4 rifle, which was outfitted with a grenade launcher.

Bales' civilian attorney, John Henry Browne, said Friday that he believes the government will have a hard time proving its case and that his client's mental state will become an important issue. Browne has said Bales suffered from the stress of serving four combat tours.

The decision to charge Bales with premeditated murder suggests that prosecutors believe they have sufficient evidence that he consciously conceived the killings.

The maximum punishment for a premeditated murder conviction is death. The mandatory minimum sentence is life imprisonment with the chance of parole.

(AP) ? China says former U.N. chief Kofi Annan will visit next week to discuss efforts to mediate an end to the crisis in Syria.

Foreign Ministry spokesman Hong Lei says Annan will visit China on Tuesday and Wednesday. Annan is a joint U.N.-Arab League envoy and will visit China after traveling to Russia.

China and Russia have been chastised because they have twice vetoed U.N. resolutions criticizing Syrian President Bashar Assad's regime for its bloody crackdown on opposition.

Hong said in a statement Saturday that Annan would meet with Chinese leaders, but he did not name them. He said China attaches importance to Annan's mediation efforts.

The U.N. estimates that more than 8,000 people have been killed since an uprising began in Syria a year ago.
