ECB's Draghi: euro not in danger

BERLIN (AP) ? The head of the European Central Bank said the euro is "absolutely not" in danger as the continent's financial crisis simmers, and insisted in an interview published Saturday that the multi-nation currency is "irrevocable."

Worries about the 17-nation eurozone's future health have been fueled lately by Greece's persistent troubles and by the financial woes of Spain, the bloc's fourth-biggest economy. European ministers this week signed a rescue package worth up to ?100 billion ($122 billion) for its ailing banks, but concern flared about Spain's prolonged recession and the debts of its regions, and the country's borrowing costs rose.

Asked in an interview with French daily Le Monde whether the euro is in danger, ECB President Mario Draghi replied: "No, absolutely not."

When outside analysts draw up scenarios for an "explosion" of the eurozone, "that underestimates the political capital that our leaders have invested in this union, as well as the support of European citizens," Draghi said in the interview, which was posted on the ECB's website.

"The euro is irrevocable," he added.

The ECB this month cut its benchmark interest rate to a record-low 0.75 percent but gave little sign of further action soon to ease the crisis. It already has made two rounds of three-year emergency loans to banks, but has shown little appetite to reactivate its government bond-buying program.

"Our mandate is not to resolve the financial problems of countries, but to ensure price stability and to contribute to the stability of the financial system in full independence," Draghi said in the interview with Le Monde, conducted Wednesday ? emphasizing the ECB's primary task of fighting inflation.

Asked whether the ECB should do more to ease the economy, Draghi replied: "We are very open. We do not have any taboos."

He said the ECB decided to cut interest rates in July because it forecast that inflation would be at its target level ? close to or below 2 percent ? at the start of 2013.

"It now seems likely that it will fall sooner than expected, at the end of 2012," he said. "Our mandate is to maintain price stability in order to prevent both higher inflation and a generalized, broadly based fall in prices. If we see such risks of deflation, we will act."

As for the eurozone economy, Draghi said that the situation "has gradually worsened, but not to the point of plunging the whole of the monetary union into recession."

"We still expect a very gradual improvement in the situation by the end of this year or the beginning of next year," he said.

Maine Breast Cancer Coalition receives grant from the Maine ...

The Maine Affiliate of Susan G. Komen for the Cure recently granted $50,000 to the Maine Breast Cancer Coalition?s Support Service Fund. The Fund assists low-income, uninsured, or underinsured applicants who don?t qualify for other assistance programs. The Fund provides financial assistance for a wide range of essential services or items including, but not limited to, screening and diagnostic services, treatment costs, prescriptions, prostheses, lymphedema compression garments, temporary living expenses for people in treatment, and treatment-related transportation costs. The Support Service Fund is a unique program that meets the applicant at her or his point of need, providing a ?safety net? for Maine residents who have exhausted other possibilities for breast cancer or breast health related assistance.

Examples of the types of assistance MBCC provides through the Komen grant include:

A 24-year-old woman from Cumberland County had been recently diagnosed with breast cancer. She was not able to work during her four-month treatment regimen because her job is physically demanding, and she was having trouble keeping up with household bills. The Support Service Fund awarded $437.50 for rent and $162.50 toward utilities.

A 36-year-old woman from Hancock County was diagnosed with breast cancer and had $1,745 in medical bills for chemo meds and IV treatments which were not covered by her insurance. The Support Service Fund awarded $1,000 toward the payment of these non-covered bills.

A 55-year-old woman from Aroostook County is self employed and has health insurance with a $10,000 deductible. She did not qualify for the Maine Breast and Cervical Health Program and needed a mammogram. The Support Service Fund awarded $261.90 for a mammogram and reading.

A new study published in the journal Drug Testing and Analysisfound that DMAA, a stimulant often found in many nutritional and sports supplements, does not originate from natural substances and is actually comprised of synthetic compounds.

The substance DMAA (1,3-dimethylamylamine) is a stimulant existing in various pre-workout supplements and often labeled as part of geranium plants. The safety and origin of DMAA in these supplements is often the subject of intense debate and has been recently linked to the death of two U.S. soldiers, causing the Army to pull the supplement from its commissaries.

Researchers led by Daniel W. Armstrong, Ph.D., of the University of Texas at Arlington, set out to determine the unique isomeric ratios of synthetic substances (DMAA) and natural substances which are distinctly different and therefore can be used to distinguish between the two. Eight different geranium extracts of different geographical origins were examined for the presence of DMAA. No DMAA was found in any of the geranium extracts.

Results showed that the DMAA actually consists of 4 different compounds called stereoisomers and that the unique isomeric ratios in synthetic DMAA were the same as those found for the DMAA in all supplements. Thus, the DMAA in supplements could not have originated from the geranium plant.

"The FDA should regulate and/or ban products in which significant amounts of synthetic pharmacological compounds are added," Armstrong opined. "Also, this information should be clearly labeled ? including their effects and possible side effects ? so that consumers can make an informed choice.
